Also File Type.  The portion of a filename, following the final point, which indicates the kind of data stored in the file. They are usually from one to three letters and examples include: .doc for a Word file; .xls for an Excel file; .ppt for a PowerPoint file; .exe for an executable program; .txt for a text file; .rtf for a Rich Text File; .pdf for a PDF file.
